Published in 1815, Sir Walter Scott's novel, The Antiquary, documents Scottish life in the last decade of the 18th century. The protagonist is William Lovel, an amateur historian, archaeologist, and dealer of antiquities of dubious origin. One of the locations in the book is Monkbarns, the fictitious manor house in Scotland inspired by Scott's visit to a real house in Arbroath called Hospitalfield House. The House stands today as an active artist's retreat on the North Sea coast near Aberdeen. Many years ago, our chief chandler spent a year in an artist residency at Hospitalfield. This fragrance is inspired by his memories and experiences there.

This distinctive fragrance recalls the atmosphere of an historic library of yesteryear, beginning with a teakwood top note that gives way to a heart of cedar and leather. Earthy sandalwood, dark musk, and patchouli wrap up this woody scent.
