Frequently Asked Questions

What type of wax/fragrance oil do you use?

Different waxes have different qualities, so the wax we use depends upon many factors including the specific product. We will always list the type of wax in the product description for each item... you may need to click on the product detail page to access that information.

The specific wax blends, fragrance oils, and suppliers we use is proprietary business information we cannot release. Rest assured that each ingredient we use has been rigorously tested by third party test labs, and deemed safe for the particular product we make. If you have a particular health/allergen concern, we advise you to err on the side of caution and avoid any suspect products.

How much scent do your candles produce?

Scent is very subjective. Some people like a heavily scented candle, and other people not so much. The degree to which a candle will "throw" a scent into the air (known in the industry as cold throw or hot throw) depends upon many factors, including the type of wax, the percentage of fragrance oil used, and the type of fragrance oil. How the candle is burned, the type of wick, and whether the wick is kept trimmed, as well as how large a room it's in will all factor in the perceived scent throw of any given candle.

In general, pure soy waxes and pure essential oils will result in a candle with a lower perceived fragrance than a candle that uses fragrance oils and a soy/paraffin blend or pure paraffin wax. These details are listed with each candle we make so you can make an informed decision.

How can I prevent candle "tunneling"?

Candles can "tunnel" (that is, burn a hole straight through the candle leaving lots of wax on the sides) for a number of reasons.

We test each batch to make sure we have the appropriate size and type of wick for each specific candle, and we never release a new candle before it passes our battery of burn tests.

If you experience tunneling with your candle(s), it might be because you aren't letting them burn long enough. Try to allow the candle to develop a pool of melted wax that goes from edge to edge. Usually this is about two hours. If you want to burn candles for a shorter time, try a smaller candle, like our 2 oz. glass mini candles.

If you're still having problems, contact us and we'll see if we can help!

My candle is emitting lots of smoke. What's wrong with it?

The most likely cause of smoke, sooting, and carbon build-up on the wick is that you haven't kept the wick trimmed. This allows the wick to use up more fuel (wax) than it can actually burn, causing the smoking issue.

To prevent this, trim your wick(s) to ¼ inch before every burn. Keep the pool of melted wax free of debris such as carbon, match heads, pieces of burned wick, etc. You can use tweezers or toothpicks to carefully pick out the debris.

Specialized wick trimmers make it easy to keep the wick in good shape.

Do you make custom products?

While we generally cannot make a single one-off candle upon request, however if you have a need for custom candles for an event such as a wedding or fund-raising event, get in touch with us!

We do wholesale many of our products for bricks & mortar retailers to carry in their stores. Find us on Faire for wholesale orders, or reach out to us if you'd like to discuss creating a co-branding collaboration with your store or brand (ie, The Lost Wax Co. x Your Brand).

We are a small company with big ambitions, and we'll let you know if we can work together.

We are not currently making soaps, but have an ambition to do so in the future. Please stay tuned.

I've been looking for (something). Can you make it for me?

Even though we are a small-batch manufacturer, we still make things in batches. That means we can't generally produce just one (or even a few) of something. Many hours are devoted to the development of new products, and we have to be able to make and sell enough of each product to make it worth our time and effort.

That being said, we're always interested to hear about what our customers' needs are. If there's a particular product idea you have, let us know using the comment form below!

I live in a hot climate. Will your candles melt in shipping?

Some of our products may be susceptible to extreme heat. While we try to create products whose melting point is higher than one would expect a package to be subjected to, we can't guarantee that ALL of our candles, soaps, or body products will NEVER melt in high heat.

Products made with 100% Soy Wax have a lower melting point, and should be protected from extreme heat. Our Soy Wax blends have been specially formulated to have a higher melting point, and should be fine though.

Products that might melt in shipping during extreme heat will have a caution on the product page. Please note that we do not monitor the weather at your destination (or in between). Reach out to us if your order arrives in bad condition, and we will work with you to determine a solution.

How long will your candles burn?

There are many factors that contribute to the length of burn time in any candle. But as a general rule, you can expect smaller candles to burn for 7 to 9 hours per ounce of wax, if burned properly. Our 8.5 oz jar candles, for example, last between 60-75 hours when properly burned.

Can I return jars to you for refilling?

No. Unfortunately, it isn't economical to accept jars for refilling. The cost of transporting them back to us would negate any savings or environmental impact.

They are nice jars, though. Once your candle is finished, you can carefully clean them out and re-use them to hold change or knick-knacks. Try planting a little succulent in them!

Please DO NOT reuse containers for food storage!

Why "Lost Wax"? What does that mean?

Our founder has two fine art degrees, and his love of wax first emerged when he was using foundry wax to create sculptures to be cast in glass or bronze using the ancient technique known as "lost wax" casting. Later on, he used it to creating colorful encaustic paintings using beeswax.

Wax is an incredible material with thousands of uses. Did you know that artifacts from ancient Egyptian tombs have been discovered decorated with brightly colored wax which were as vibrant as the day they were made, when discovered almost 3,000 years later?
