The Lost Wax Company is an independent fragrance and gift company in Norfolk, Virginia, built around the curious relationship between scent, memory, objects, and stories.

From our shop in Ghent, we create and curate candles, home fragrance, soaps, seasonal goods, teas, gifts, and other things worth discovering. Some are made by us. Others are chosen because they are beautifully made, unexpectedly interesting, or have a story we think is worth passing along.

The Lost Wax Story

A smell can return you to a place you haven’t thought about in years. An old object can make you wonder who owned it, where it traveled, or why someone saved it. A local legend can survive for centuries because people keep finding something in it worth retelling.

Those connections are at the heart of The Lost Wax Company.

Our name borrows from the ancient lost-wax process of making an object by first creating something that disappears. Our motto, Aroma Clavis Memoriæ — Fragrance is the key to memory, expresses much the same idea: things may vanish, but impressions remain.

The Lost Wax Company grew from more than twenty years in retail, including fourteen years in museum retail, where objects, interpretation, merchandising, and storytelling constantly overlap. Today those ideas come together in our Norfolk shop through fragrance, handmade products, unusual merchandise, seasonal traditions, events, and experiences designed to encourage a little curiosity.
