The Archivist's Maxims

The following documents were recovered among the papers of the vanished Archivist. Several passages had been encrypted, apparently by hand, while others were copied from books, articles, and personal notebooks. Why these particular texts were preserved remains unknown. Decipher them and determine the common thread that binds them together. Each cryptogram uses a different cipher.
