They tried to sink her. She made history instead.
In 1706, Grace Sherwood, a widowed mother of three from Pungo, Virginia (now part of Virginia Beach), found herself accused of witchcraft by suspicious neighbors who blamed her for everything from ruined crops to mysterious storms. Her fate was decided by an extraordinary test: bound and thrown into a branch of the Lynnhaven River near what is now known as "Witchduck Point", she would be declared innocent if she sank—and guilty if she floated. Grace survived, which was apparently all the proof her accusers needed.
Known ever since as the Witch of Pungo, Grace endured imprisonment before eventually returning to her home and living out her remaining years. Three hundred years later, in 2006, Virginia's governor officially restored her good name by issuing an official pardon, and naming July 10, 2006 as Grace Sherwood Day.
Our You Can't Keep a Good Witch Down magnet pays tribute to one of Tidewater's most remarkable historical figures—a woman whose determination outlasted the superstition and injustice of her time.
A little local legend, a little defiance, and a reminder that some spirits simply refuse to sink.
