A remarkable woman. An extraordinary ordeal. A legend three centuries in the making.
In 1706, Grace Sherwood of Pungo, Virginia, was accused of witchcraft and subjected to one of colonial America's most notorious trials. Bound and cast into the waters of the Lynnhaven River, she survived the infamous "ducking" test, only to be declared guilty of witchcraft and imprisoned. Her story endured long after the accusations faded, earning her a place in Tidewater folklore as the Witch of Pungo.
Three hundred years later, in 2006, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine formally restored her good name, acknowledging the injustice she had suffered.
Our Grace Sherwood History Magnet commemorates this fascinating chapter of Virginia history, featuring the story of the woman whose courage and resilience have inspired generations.
A thoughtful keepsake for history lovers, collectors of local lore, and anyone who believes some stories deserve never to be forgotten.
